  • Course Summary

    The course examines the biological and environmental forces that shape individual development from conception through adolescence. Although it emphasizes the normal development, attention is also given to problems in development. The course is divided into three modules. The first module focuses on the historical background of psychology and developmental psychology, covers the importance of developmental psychology and then discuses the role of the nurse.  It also deals with the role of heredity, environment, ecological influences, family, and community on human development. The second module focuses on the psychodynamic theories (Erikson's psychosocial theory, Piaget's cognitive theory, and Freud's psychosexual theory), it provide knowledge base about ego defense mechanisms. The third one covers the coping strategies, Maslow Hierarchy of needs and psychological aspects of nursing care, and mental retardation. Each module is followed by a multiple-choice, true and false and essay exam.
