We hope that you will benefit of this course & that the information provided will help you to understand the material presented in the lectures. Microbiology and its agricultural importance and application have been taught at Cairo University since the establishment of a Botany/Microbiology department over 100 years. Its purpose has always been to enlighten students to the wonders of the unseen microbial world that flourishes in and around us. We would like to dedicate this work to the many devoted professors who, over the years, have accepted the challenge of presenting this material to a diverse population of students at the Higher Institute/Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University (established since 1889). This course has always been designed with the following goals in mind. First, to guide students to an understanding of the universal principles of biology that governs all life on this planet. Secondly, to educate the students of each new generation to the wonderment of the mostly unseen microbial world by showing them the importance of microbes to their own lives, environment and agriculture. The final goal, is to provide the tools and knowledge to those who join this course to be fully participating citizens in their own lives and in that of the society at large. It is our responsibility to continue this tradition, using modern tools as teaching aids whenever they are suitable.
